Koi story

Koi Story is a one-act musical about a widow, her daughter, and a Japanese windsock called koinobori.

Hana Imoto wants only one thing this Saturday: for her mother Karen to take her to the Flower Market fair. Unfortunately for her, Dr. Karen Anderson has other ideas for her first day off in three weeks. Much needed, long overdue yardwork. The two find a compromise in the hanging of Hana’s late father’s koinobori; a Japanese windsock typically flown on Children’s Day, now one of a very few remaining mementos of Hana’s father.

Inspired by a true event from my childhood, wherein a very large hammer fell from a very tall place and hit me square on the head,  Koi Story is a tale about traditions, and heritage and the distances we all must travel to ensure that the stories we tell are told authentically, honestly, and with purpose.

Zoe Manarel recorded this song for me from my one-act Koi Story and omg she is amazing. So lucky to have worked with her before she becomes huge. Shout out to Jennifer Blood, who provided the voice of the mom, Dr. Imoto.

The second number I recorded with Zoe Manarel from my one-act, Koi Story. This girl is gold. This song moment needs a little setting up. Her character Hana has just had a hammer fall on her head from a second story ledge and is now sedated and undergoing surgery by her mom, the neurosurgeon.
